What is the League of Women Voters?

The League of Women Voters is a multi-issue , non-partisan political organization dedicated to keeping our democracy strong by giving every citizen a voice in government. The League encourages informed and active participation of citizens in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy. League membership is made up of more than 100,000 men and women in 1100 communities throughout the United States . We mobilize citizen action for a better America at the local, state and national levels of government.


What does the League do?

The League works through the American political process to bring about constructive change. We REGISTER millions to vote and DEFEND voting rights... MONITOR government activities from city councils and county commissions to state legislatures and the U.S. Congress to assure open, responsive government... TEACH citizens about their rights and responsibilities... SPONSOR candidate rallies and public issues forums... INFORM through our in-depth and balanced issues analyses. We TAKE ACTION, LOBBY, and TESTIFY on the concerns important to you: fair campaigns; environmental regulation; health care; children's issues; tax reform; growth management; good government practices; and education.


What is Voter Service?

Voter Service promotes citizen participation in the electoral process. We educate voters by providing information on constitutional amendments and other referenda on the ballots. The League sponsors candidate rallies with WSRE-TV, our public television station. These rallies often provide the only opportunity for all voters to see and hear all candidates for local and state public offices.


Are men eligible to join the League?

Absolutely! There are no barriers to participation in any League activity on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, or disability. We actively recruit to increase the diversity of our league.


Are non-members welcome at League meetings?

Yes, our meetings are open to the public and advertised in various media throughout the area.


How does the League take positions on issues and still be non-partisan?

We neither support nor oppose candidates for office. We are a political organization that does take positions on issues that confront us locally, nationally, and on a state level. Our members decide what issues League will address and what action the League will take after carefully studying issues.


Where do I fit in?

The League needs you. Join your friends, neighbors, and colleagues in the nationwide grassroots network that is helping to shape the laws by which you live. How much time does member participation require?

As much as you are able to give. Some members spend many hours a week on League activities; others are able only to read fact-filled League publications to become better-informed citizens and voters. Each is important to the League.
